Great Yarmouth is a wonderful destination for dog owners. Miles of sandy beaches, beautiful countryside walks and plenty of dog-friendly pubs mean your four-legged companion can enjoy the holiday just as much as you do.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
Great Yarmouth's main beach has seasonal dog restrictions during summer months (typically May to September) on the central section between the piers. However, dogs are welcome year-round on the beach sections north of Britannia Pier and south of Wellington Pier. Outside the summer restrictions, the entire beach is dog-friendly.
Gorleston Beach, just south of Great Yarmouth, has more relaxed dog policies and is a favourite with local dog walkers. The firm sand is perfect for games of fetch, and the beach is less crowded than the main Great Yarmouth seafront.
Caister Beach, north of Great Yarmouth, is another excellent option for dog walking with long stretches of quiet sand and dunes.
Dog Walking Routes
The Seafront Promenade
The paved promenade stretching along the seafront is perfect for dog walking in any weather. It's flat, well-maintained and offers lovely sea views throughout. Dogs should be kept on leads on the promenade itself.
Breydon Water Nature Reserve
A stunning estuary and wetland area on the western edge of Great Yarmouth. The circular walk around Breydon Water is about 5 miles and offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. Dogs must be kept on leads to protect nesting birds, but it's a beautiful walk in any season.
Norfolk Broads Walks
The Norfolk Broads offer numerous dog-friendly walking trails through beautiful countryside. Riverside paths, woodland walks and village circuits provide variety, and many Broads pubs are dog-friendly too. Just 15 minutes drive from Great Yarmouth.
Dog-Friendly Pubs and Restaurants
Many Great Yarmouth pubs welcome well-behaved dogs, particularly in their outdoor areas and some in their bar areas too. Blackfriars Tavern near St George Hotel is known for being dog-friendly. Always check with individual establishments before visiting, as policies can change.
Several of the seafront cafes have outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, perfect for a coffee stop during your beach walk.
Practical Tips
Always carry poo bags and clean up after your dog. Keep dogs on leads near livestock in the countryside and on the promenade. Bring fresh water for your dog, especially on hot days. Check beach restriction dates before your visit as they can vary year to year. The nearest vet surgery to St George Hotel is in the town centre.
