Discover Family-Friendly Walks Around Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is a fantastic destination for a family holiday, with its bustling seafront, Pleasure Beach, and SEA LIFE centre. But beyond the amusements, a wealth of natural beauty awaits, perfect for family walks and outdoor adventures. Here are some of our favourite routes, all easily accessible from the St George Hotel, your comfortable base for exploring the area.

Coastal Capers: Gorleston-on-Sea to Hopton-on-Sea

For a classic seaside stroll, the walk from Gorleston-on-Sea to Hopton-on-Sea is hard to beat. Starting just south of Great Yarmouth, Gorleston boasts a beautiful sandy beach and a charming promenade. The route follows the Norfolk Coast Path southwards, offering stunning views of the North Sea. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for pushchairs and little legs.

Enjoy the fresh sea air, build sandcastles along the way, and keep an eye out for seabirds. Hopton-on-Sea offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than Great Yarmouth, with a lovely sandy beach and a few cafes for refreshments. You can either walk back the same way or catch a bus back to Great Yarmouth. From the St George Hotel, you can quickly access a bus to Gorleston, making this a convenient family outing.

A Stroll Through History: Burgh Castle Roman Fort

Combine history with stunning scenery with a walk around Burgh Castle Roman Fort. This impressive Roman ruin overlooks Breydon Water, a vast expanse of marshland teeming with birdlife. The circular walk around the fort is relatively short and easy, making it ideal for younger children.

Explore the remains of the Roman walls, imagine what life was like in Roman Britain, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Breydon Water is a haven for birdwatchers, so bring your binoculars and see if you can spot any waders, ducks, or geese. There is plenty of space for kids to run around and burn off some energy. You can reach Burgh Castle by car or bus from Great Yarmouth. Consider booking a family room at the St George Hotel, providing plenty of space to relax after a day of exploring.

Broads Adventures: Thurne Dyke to St Benet's Abbey

No trip to Norfolk is complete without exploring the Broads National Park. Just a short drive (or bus ride) from Great Yarmouth, Thurne Dyke offers a fantastic starting point for a scenic walk along the River Thurne. The path is flat and easy to follow, making it suitable for families with young children.

Follow the riverbank to St Benet's Abbey, a historic ruined abbey with a fascinating history. The abbey grounds are a great place to explore and have a picnic. Keep an eye out for boats cruising along the river, and try to spot some of the Broads' famous wildlife, such as dragonflies, butterflies, and marsh harriers. This walk is especially beautiful in the summer months when the Broads are alive with colour. Remember we have free parking at the St George Hotel, making getting to the Broads even easier.

Woodland Wonders: Fritton Lake Country Park

For a change of scenery, head to Fritton Lake Country Park, located just south of Great Yarmouth. This beautiful park offers a variety of walking trails through woodland, meadows, and around the picturesque Fritton Lake. Choose from shorter, easier routes for younger children, or longer, more challenging walks for older kids.

The park also has a playground, a cafe, and a boat hire facility, making it a great day out for the whole family. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as deer, squirrels, and birds. Fritton Lake Country Park is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Great Yarmouth and enjoy some peace and quiet in nature.
