Great Yarmouth Town Walls
Great Yarmouth's medieval town walls are among the best preserved in England. Built in the 13th century to protect the prosperous fishing port, significant sections still stand today and can be explored on foot.
History
The walls were built between 1261 and 1400, eventually encircling the entire town with 18 towers and 10 gates. At their peak, they made Great Yarmouth one of the most heavily fortified towns in medieval England. The walls reflected the town's wealth from the herring fishing industry.
What You Can See
The best preserved section runs along the north-west side of the town. Several towers still stand, and you can walk alongside long stretches of the original wall. Information boards along the route explain the history and significance of different sections.
Heritage Walk
Combine the town walls with a walk through the Rows, Great Yarmouth's unique medieval alleyways. Then visit St Nicholas Church, one of the largest parish churches in England, and the Tolhouse Gaol, one of the oldest prisons in the country.
